Jane Eyre Diary Assignment
This can be extra credit. Ask by the end of the first week of study if you are interested.
Minimum of 10 days, dated [month, day] — not necessarily consecutive days, but in chronological order – Maximum of 15 days.
No contradictions [You can improvise what a character may have thought, for example, but nothing in your diary can be something that clearly did not or could not have happened, that the character could not or would not have thought. For example, you cannot have Mr. Rochester wish to kill Jane.]
Proofread [You may use the kind of grammar the novel uses, but you may not make simply careless mistakes.] Do not misspell the character’s name!
Looks old – absolutely no notebook paper!!! May be handwritten in a clear, legible handwriting or typed in a “old” looking font. You may use color, but only appropriately. Perhaps old ink may have turned brown, but pink ink would not have been available.
Design a cover. That will be part of your grade.
Do not turn in a bad one !!! It makes me angry to waste my time.
Length of each entry: a suggestion is 1/2 typical page [a “typical page” being 8 1/2 X 11, though many diaries will not use that size paper; this suggestion is simply to give you an idea of length] , but there is no real length requirement. Content is what is important. You should not have numerous repetitions, e.g. someone going on about loving someone else or hating someone else ad nauseum for 8 of your days. Realize the project is worth a test grade; your number, your length, the appearance, and especially your content will determine the number of points you actually get.
