If you were out, of course you did! What should you do?
First, realize that I’m trying to get the rest of the class started. Everyone else was here yesterday and it isn’t fair for me to spend 5 to 10 minutes of class catching you up while they just sit; furthermore, I have my mind on this day’s class and not on yesterday’s class. You were out; you must take responsibility for that. Ask a responsible student near you what we did. You should agree beforehand who takes good notes and who is good to check with on handouts, etc. and then check with them when you are out. Copy their notes. Write down any due dates. Ask me [when it is convenient and you will not be interrupting] whether I’ve updated the class calendar on the wall or not. If I have, you can get assignment dates from there. If not, use your neighbor. You must be very careful to ask if you hear me discussing an assignment that you know nothing about.
If we got handouts, if we begin to work with it, ask for one. If not, wait until the end of class or the end of the day. Bring me a copy of the handout and I can probably supply it.
I will meet with you after school if you would like to to explain anything you don’t understand. Again, though, this meeting is not to answer “Did I miss anything?” but to explain anything you have found out about that you did not understand.
